Engineering Challenge for 5th Graders

This week in library students participated in a problem solving task using our new texo blocks.  For their challenge, 5th graders had to design a stadium with their team equaling 24 inches or higher with a common set of supplies.

They were given "money" to head to the store to purchase any additional supplies they might need.

I was truly amazed by the collaboration among students and the unique designs they were able to develop.  They had 15 minutes to create their design.

At the end of the lesson, students took a gallery walk to visit each group's creation.  During this time, student builders shared details about their stadium.  Each grade level had a different challenge for the week so be sure to ask your students about their creation.

Lego WeDo kits in 5th Grade

5th graders have been working on their programming skills in the library with the Lego Education WeDo kits.  They were able to choose which initial project they wanted to work on including the drumming monkey, smart spinner, or dancing birds.  To get these items to function, students had to follow specific steps as they put the legos together as well as cooperate with their team members to ensure a successful completion.  Sequencing is very important as students create together.  They were so engaged in the problem solving process and even had time to create their own "choice" project.
