What is Concord's Makerspace?

Concord Elementary is excited to announce that we plan to transform our library into a 21st century learning space. We will be designing a Makerspace for our students.  Our goal is to transform our library into a space where students can collaborate, have choice, and create amazing projects.  The fundamental shift in our understanding of teaching and learning is transforming all aspects of our school.  Our library will divided into a variety of learning spaces for research, collaboration, engineering, and development.

Since media and technology are intertwined with every student's life and in school in the 21st century, skills related to analysis and production of various forms of media are essential.  Students will be integrating and evaluating information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually, quantitatively, and orally.  They will make strategic use of digital media and visual displays of data to express information and enhance understanding of presentations.  They will apply STEM content to answer complex questions, to investigate global issues, and to develop solutions for challenges, and real world problems.

In this cutting edge learning environment, we will design a variety of learning centers.  We will set up a tinkering table where students will be able to explore a variety of electronics and engineering type scenarios.  They will be able to experience the creation process with a variety of materials such as legos, tinker toys, lincoln logs, and art supplies. There will be a research space where students can investigate topics of interest with physical books and web resources.  In the creation zone, students can record, publish, share, present, and design a variety of technology projects.  Students will also get a multitude of experiences with coding.

Key Components will include the following:
Legos will promote creative thinking, building, and design.  Students can utilize Lego story creation software, Lego Movie Making apps, and physical legos to create scenes and stories.

Lego Robotics Kits will allow students to use coding and program their lego creations.  This is a great way to encourage students to learn basic coding skills.

Circuitry kits will allow students to build circuits to test their hypothesis and find out what happens when they connect various pieces.
